My Confession

Are you a good person?

Maybe you keep your head down. You avoid trouble. You try not to ruffle feathers. By society’s standards you might pass.

By God’s law, probably not.

In this course I will talk about morality at times. When I do, I am not speaking from some elite lectern. This is not a scolding. It is a warning from a friend. Do not do what I did. Do not repeat the same mistakes.

I am not a moral hero. I have failed in ways that still make me wince. Here are a few.

  • Stealing
  • Lying
  • Adultery
  • Blasphemy
  • Heresy
  • Apostasy
  • Rebelliousness
  • Violence

I am not proud of my actions and what I have done.

But why bring this up?

Because the story is not only about failure. It is about mercy. The God who made you is a God of second chances. That is not a slogan. That is the heart of the Gospel.

You may feel ashamed or numb about things you have done. Join the club. You may think you are beyond repair. You are not. God’s mercy is greater than your sin, whatever it is. No matter what is in your past, there is a path forward if you repent and turn from what destroys you. It is not easy. It is worth it.

I try every day to do better. So should you.

Kind of heavy, yes, but it needed to be said.
